Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to be registered in a CanSkate or STARskate program to skate synchro?
Yes! It is important that our skaters are actively working on their individual skating skills while also training with us. In order to develop as a well rounded skater, it is important that skaters are exposed to and trained in all aspects of the Skate Canada CanSkate and STAR programs.
Do I need to leave my home club to skate with WSST?
No! Skaters are always encouraged to remain training with their home skating club, if that is something they want to do. We have skaters on our teams from several different singles clubs all over the Durham region and GTA.
What is the commitment required to skate on a synchro team?
Our teams typically start training at the end of August with a 2-3 day camp to kick off the season. Then our season runs from September - March. Skaters typically train 1-3 hours on the ice, per week, but time can increase as skaters become more competitive. Teams also take part in off-ice training 1-2 hours per week.
How do I join one of the Ice Fyre teams?
We hold tryouts in March/April each year. We always have information posted on our website about what teams we offer and which ones have openings for the season. If you miss tryouts, that’s OK! Reach out to us and we can direct you to the team that is best appropriate for your skill level.
Are there commitments outside of the scheduled ice time?
Yes, skaters also take part in off-ice training throughout the season. This can consist of fitness, flexibility training and program work (working on arms, heads, facial expression). Teams will also take part in fun team-bonding events throughout the season and several competitions. These events are typically held on weekends between September and March.
What does a typical season look like?
Our season begins just as our previous one ends with Tryouts in the spring. We hold Spring training sessions from April - June and then our season starts up again at the end of August with a focus on team and skill building. Teams start building programs in the fall to prepare for competition season. Competitions are typically held between December and March. At the conclusion of the competition season our skaters will celebrate their accomplishments at our end of the year gala.
